Unlike serial killers who select their own victims, the targets of hit men are carefully chosen for them by their employers who pay them to kill on demand. Although professional hit men and serial killers share the common characteristics of killing multiple victims in separate and unrelated events, hit men are not serial killers because their to kill is strictly financial. The murders committed by professional hit men fulfill no emotional or psychological needs on their part.

Serial killers such as Ted Bundy, on the other hand, are driven to murder by fantasy and powerful emotional needs such as lust or excitement. A unique exception to the clear distinction between serial killers and contract killers is the late Richard Kuklinski who was both a serial killer and a professional hit man.

Hire a killer, rent a killer, hire a hitman, rent a hitman, hire an assassin, order murder for money, kill eliminate a competitor, hire a professional killer, hire a professional assassin, hire a killer for money, hire a killer for money, hire a killer for the kill, order a killer for the kill, hired killers for the money, the site of contract.

When he wasn’t committing contract killings for the Gambino crime family, Kuklinski was killing strangers who irritated or annoyed him. He claimed to derive great pleasure and exhilaration from the challenge of killing his victims. Kuklinski was given the nickname 'Iceman' for his method of freezing a victim to confuse the time of death.

Serial predators reemerge from a cooling off period to strike again when the urge to kill becomes overwhelming to them. A serial killer may not even understand his/her compulsion to kill but knows that it is both undeniable and uncontrollable when the urge arises. The cooling off period between murders is highly subjective, unpredictable and it varies from one serial killer to another in terms of its duration. The length of the cooling off period can also vary between murders committed by the same serial killer. The duration can be from days or weeks to months and in rare instances, even years. I couldn't help but think of how the media portrays serial killers and hit-men in such different lights.

The role of hit-men have been played out in a number of popular action movies over the years, with roles played by super stars like Jason Statham. Even a video game series titled 'Hitman' has had great success and portrays hit-men in a much less harsh light than that of serial killers.

From an educational standpoint it is understandable to see how these two types of killers differ, but from a moral aspect I find it hard to distinguish between both parties justification. The difference between professional assassins and serial killers is a rather interesting topic to investigate. Motive plays a significant role in distinguishing professional assassins from serial killers as their motives for killing are completely different. I find the case of Dennis Radar especially intriguing. Unlike many other serial killers, Dennis Radar was capable of containing his need to kill for longer periods of times. Did Dennis Radar feel any sympathy for his victims?

What caused him to strategize a method to contain his need to kill? Why is this unusual characteristic for a serial killer only displayed in Dennis Radar? What makes him different from the typical serial killer?.

While reading, I think was most shocked at the fact that these 'professional assassins' treat killing as their job. Knowing one is committing this act makes me question their sanity and psychological state, as this is not normal behavior. Although the article makes the clear distinction between these people and serial killers, I am curious to see the similarities between their mental states. The cooling off period of serial killers and their thrill of killing for pleasure is very disturbing, but we view these 'professional assassins' as just hit men getting their money from their employers. I would love to read more about this subject. Before reading this article I never really connected the two together, but after this article it made me think about how similar they are. It is interesting to examine the similarities and differences between the two.

I found the section on the cooling off period quite intriguing also, because I would always think how the serial killer reacts after murdering someone. Do they watch the news and like what they see? Do they constantly think and obsess over it?On a separate note, an extension of the article could be the link between serial killers and soldiers. Much like hit met soldiers enlist into a profession where they are trained to kill, and yet we all know soldiers and serial killers are completely different.

Contract killers for hire

The motives are completely different and many times the soldier's ideals to want to kill are justified through protection, patriotism, heroism, and many many more. I just think it would be a nice article to go along with this one. Prior to reading the article by Dr. Scott Bonn I never really considered the distinction between a serial killer and professional hit man. As the article points out, both share many similar characteristics: typically killing numerous people over time and being devoid of empathy for their victims. The distinction between the two, however, is made at the incentive and/or “motivation” to kill level.

For the serial killer, the argument is made that a deep psychological ‘urge’ is a prerequisite for murder, fulfilled by the actual killing of another party which typically results in sexual pleasure fantasies (a reward). Conversely, the ‘urge’ is generally absent with few exceptions in hit man. Furthermore, the article points out that a “cooling off” refractory period of varying lengths which is characteristic of serial killers is not present in professional killings.

For the serial killer, the refractory period’s duration is governed by the ever-growing inner ‘urge’ which reaches an unbearable threshold so that the serial killer must murder again. On the other hand, the ‘urge’ to kill is absent in the professional hit man. In most cases, the reward and motivation are purely momentary. The professional hit man is merely ‘conducting business’ of a most deviant illegal variety whereas the serial killer is repeatedly suppressing a deeply-seated inner ‘urge’ by killing. I understand that the difference between serial killers and hit men is that serial killers do the things they do because they experience some sort of emotional phenomena, and that hit men kill solely as a financial deed, but to me I would think there has to be some sort of emotion behind a hit men during a killing. It is hard for me to concept that a person could section of 'work' and feelings completely, so I imagine they must experience some sort of emotion, but maybe not to the extent a serial killer. Perhaps they are driven to kill because of the emotional phenomena that they have towards money.

It is interesting to see the dichotomy that arises between these two because at the end of the day they are still committing the same crime, it is just a matter of the derived motivation behind it. I found the difference between serial killers and hit men to be very interesting. The motives between the two are completely different.

The fact that hit men are killing just for financial reasons is ridiculous. But, the fact that serial killers simply kill because someone annoyed them is even more ridiculous. I found that the cooling off period was very disturbing, I don't understand how someone could obsess over killing. I would love to learn more about how a serial killer or even a hit man thinks or acts right after committing a murder. A hit man and a serial killer are two distinct concepts, however they can be overlapping.

What distinguishes a serial killer from a hit man is someone who gets something more than just financial gratification out of the killing- a release, or pleasure of sorts. Serial killers have urges, they feel the need to kill, whereas a hit man solely does so in seeking a pay day. However, I say that they can be overlapping in that some contract killings may be done by a socio or psychopath who genuinely enjoys the kill. Such as, as mentioned, Kuklinski the ‘iceman' would. The question that I wan to ask is: is one worse than the either?

Murder is murder, regardless of the motive, but is it more morally acceptable if you don’t enjoy it? Or less so, because you aren’t necessarily deranged?. I agree that professional assassins are not serial killers because they do not always have the 'urge' to kill someone. Assassins do not get as good a feeling when killing someone as serial killers do. Yes, one can argue that professional assassins should be considered serial killers because they continue to kill people regularly or until they are caught. However, there are other jobs that require killing someone for some reason where the workers are not considered killers such as a military officer or a police man.

Serial killers have a need to kill for there sanity or to get a good feeling while assassins are just doing there job even though it is morally wrong and a crime. Murder doesn’t change if you are getting paid (hit men) or going out of your way to kill someone (serial killer). The distinction between these two is motivation. Hit men are motivated by money while serial killers gain pleasure and satisfaction.

Either was I do not believe this is a good way to divide serial killers from hit men because both are driven to murder another person because they like it. Therefore both are equally motivated to kill another human being. I believe that the only difference between these two categories is that hit men gain compensation for doing what they “love.” Which is very disturbing because they live a normal life with out anyone finding out of there disgusting actions. 'because their motivation to kill is strictly financial'& therefore they are not serial killers. As opposed to - hatred - revenge - sport - sexual - loathing - self loathing - the god complex - demonic identification - we could go on.But the love of money / reward / the feeling of belonging / the power trip / prestige of working for the aristocracy of crime & lawlessness /. Could not be equal to what motivates serial killing.Maybe they are people who cannot take responsiility for their own urges & desires & therefore recuse themselves from the responsibility of the selection. People who need a catalist, like some need a father confessor to justify the act, while zealosly executing the command = I love my job, it is so satisfying & it requires no hassel, no responsibility other than to obey a command.Do serial killers love their chosen 'work'.
